A Call to Prayer and Fasting

All spiritual renewal or major breakthrough begins with prayer. This is especially true as we seek the Lord for major spiritual advance for the Gospel in entire nations or regions.

Jesus began his public ministry with 40 days of prayer and fasting. Daniel sought the Lord for 21 days (Daniel 10).

You may remember also Queen Esther words: "Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same. And then, though it is against the law, I will go in to see the king..." (Esther 4), or those of King Jehoshaphat who, when the armies of hell were coming against him which filled him with fear, begged the Lord for guidance and ordered everyone in Judah to fast (2 Chronicles 19). We know that in each of these cases there was victory.

Jesus on one occasion taught, "...this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21) so we know that some things are going to take a bit more than prayer alone.

Sometimes the Lord calls someone whose heart is for his or her nation and simply says, 'encourage the saints to fast'. Perhaps you are that person for your nation.

Pray and ask God to show you what he would have you to do if this is something that resonates with you. If this is the Lord's call to you, invite others to join you. Perhaps it will be a 'Daniel fast' or another expression. 

If you do, there are different ways to fast. You may feel led to fast partially (Daniel 10:2-3). You may feel God is calling you to abstain from eating food and drink fluids. You may feel led to fast breakfast and lunch or fast dinner.

An intercessor wrote: "When I first felt God prompting me to fast for three days, I said, 'okay, if I can have soup'. He gently said, 'I would like you to abstain from eating anything'. My 'old nature' screamed and wanted to rebel but the spirit of the Lord within won. So the Holy Spirit will lead, lets go before the Lord for our nation and expect some things to shift a gear or two not just in our nation but in our personal lives and communities too. We can expect amazing breakthroughs though obedience to prayer and fasting."

Much of the church has long held to a lectionary for daily scripture reading. It seems wise likewise to follow a systematic daily plan to pray for the lost and the completion of Christ's Great Commission to make disciples of all ethne.
